WOODSTOCK, Vt. - Woodstock boys soccer is moving on. The eighth-seeded Wasps beat ninth-seeded White River Valley 2-0 at home Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the playoffs.
Senior Luke Hecker and freshman Henry Freyer scored for Woodstock, and sophomore goalkeeper Grayson Hughes made several clutch saves to keep the Wildcats off the board.
It was a quick rematch. The teams played to a 2-2 draw at Woodstock just five days earlier, on Oct. 15, and this time the Wasps found the answer.
Woodstock improves to 7-6-2 and has won three of its last five games. That is a big turnaround from a 1-14 season a year ago. After a 1-0 win over Fair Haven on Oct. 1, coach Alex Montaño said the goals were to finish at least .500 and host a playoff game. “We’re on track for that, so, at this point in the season, coming from a season with one win last year — I couldn’t be happier,” he said. The Wasps checked both boxes, and now they get a shot at the top seed.
Woodstock lost 5-0 at Stowe in the first round last fall.
Woodstock boys soccer is next at top-seeded Stowe in the quarterfinals on Friday, October 23, at 3 p.m.
Other relevant play on Tuesday, October 20:
Green Mountain (2-14) 0 at Peoples Academy (10-2-3) 4 Second-seeded Peoples advanced at home.
BFA-Fairfax (5-8-2) 1 at Fair Haven (8-5-1) 6 Fair Haven, which Woodstock beat 1-0 on Oct. 1, rolled at home.
That wraps up the day for Woodstock Union High School sports. We’ll see you next time!
