RANDOLPH, Vt. - Windsor girls soccer’s season ended Wednesday afternoon in the tightest kind of game, a 0-1 loss at eighth-seeded Randolph in the first round of the playoffs.
It was a true 8-vs-9 matchup, and one goal decided it. Randolph improves to 8-6 and moves on to a quarterfinal at top-seeded Vergennes on Saturday.
The ninth-seeded Yellow Jackets finish 7-8 in a retooling year. Windsor came into the fall having lost six senior starters from a 14-1 team that was upset by Stowe in overtime in the quarterfinals.
Windsor still had some big days, including a 6-0 win at Rivendell, a pair of 4-2 wins and a 2-1 double-overtime win over White River Valley on senior night on Oct. 16. Amelia Rockwood scored the winner that night with five minutes left in the second overtime, off a cross from Callie Spaulding.
“We are very proud of this team and of how they overcame a slow start to dig in to win in double overtime. They didn’t quit and really wanted this win, especially for our seniors on senior night,” coach Jen Rupp said after that game.
Windsor’s fall is not over yet. Yellow Jackets field hockey plays Stowe in the playoffs on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Other relevant play on Wednesday, October 21:
White River Valley (5-9-1) 0 at Fair Haven (8-5-2) 2 Fair Haven, which beat Windsor 3-1 on Oct. 14, advanced at home.
Woodstock (5-9-1) 2 at BFA-Fairfax (7-7-1) 1 Woodstock, which edged Windsor 1-0 on Sept. 4, pulled off a road upset.
That wraps up the day for Windsor High School sports. We’ll see you next time!
