RICHFORD, Vt. - Sharon girls soccer’s season ended Tuesday afternoon with a 0-2 loss at second-seeded Richford in the first round of the playoffs, but the 15th-seeded Phoenix made the Rockets work for it.
Richford led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Rose Witherspoon. Sharon put pressure on the Richford defense midway through the second half, and the Phoenix defense turned back several deep pushes. Richford hit the crossbar with under five minutes left, and Witherspoon did not score her second goal until there was 1:30 left to play.
Sharon’s goalkeeper finished with 23 saves.
The Phoenix finish 0-15, while Richford improves to 11-3-1. Tuesday’s two-goal margin against the second seed matched the Phoenix’s closest result of the season.
First-year coach Hilary Mills Linehan said before the season, “Keys for a successful season are consistency, teamwork and playing to our strengths.”
