BRISTOL, N.H. - Mascoma field hockey’s season ended Thursday afternoon with a 0-1 loss at sixth-seeded Newfound in the first round of the playoffs.
The 11th-seeded Royals were one goal away from extending their season against a team they had already matched once. On Oct. 6, Mascoma and Newfound played to a 2-2 draw at Mascoma, with Tori Petty scoring both Royals goals and goalie Addie Irwin saving a penalty stroke.
Mascoma finishes 5-10-1. The Royals’ wins included a 7-0 rout at Winnisquam on Oct. 14, a 4-2 win at Newport, a 3-1 win over Monadnock and a 1-0 win at Conant.
Irwin was in her first season in goal, and coach Danielle Pushee said before the season that roster numbers would be a challenge. “We are struggling with numbers this year; we have a solid nine in our returning players, but finding people to fill out the roster with experience has been difficult. If we are able to adjust our style of play and use our strengths, we should be competitive this year while bringing new players along,” she said.
Newfound improves to 11-3-2 and moves on to a quarterfinal at third-seeded Kearsarge (13-2) on Monday. Kearsarge beat Mascoma 3-0 on Sept. 11.
Other relevant play on Thursday, October 22:
Laconia (6-11) 1 at Derryfield (10-4-1) 3 Laconia, which beat Mascoma 3-1 on Sept. 18, saw its season end on the road.
That wraps up the day for Mascoma Valley Regional High School sports. We’ll see you next time!
